If any of this seems interesting, here are some more tidbits that you should know:
š A Mascot with Muscle: Meet Big Al, UAās beloved elephant mascot. The elephant became a symbol of Crimson Tide after a sports writer famously described the team as a āstampede of elephantsā in the 1930s. Big Al is now a central figure in UAās legendary school spirit.

Your personal statement is one of the most important parts of your college application. Itās your chance to showcase who you are beyond grades and test scores, so make it count! Hereās how to craft a personal statement that stands out:
šÆ Find Your Focus:
Start by reflecting on your experiences, values, and passions. What makes you unique? Choose a theme or story that represents your personal growth or a defining moment in your life. This focus will serve as the backbone of your essay, helping you stay on track and ensuring your message is clear. Here is a great set of example values: https://www.collegeessayguy.com/cwiab-student-15-values-exercise
šļø Show, Donāt Just Tell:
Instead of just stating facts about yourself, use specific anecdotes and vivid details to illustrate your points. For example, rather than saying, āI am a hard worker,ā share a story about a challenging project you completed or an obstacle you overcame. This approach makes your essay more engaging and memorable.
š Be Authentic:
Admissions officers want to see the real you, so be honest and genuine in your writing. Donāt try to fit into a mold or write what you think they want to hear. Your authenticity will shine through and make your essay more compelling. Please, do not lie.
š Edit and Revise:
Writing a strong personal statement takes time, so donāt rush the process. Start early, and give yourself plenty of time to revise and refine your essay. Ask teachers, mentors, or friends for feedback, and be open to making changes. Remember, your first draft is just the beginning.
š Connect the Dots:
Make sure your essay ties together different parts of your application. For example, if the rest of your application shows that youāre interested in business, donāt write your personal statement about your passion for baseball. This can oftentimes be confusing for your reader so instead try to connect the dots between your passion for baseball and your interest in business.
A well-written personal statement can be the difference between a good application and a great one. By focusing on your unique story, showing rather than telling, and being authentic, youāll create an essay that truly resonates with admissions officers. Take your time, revise thoroughly, and remember that your personal statement is your opportunity to let your voice be heard.
COLLEGE LIST TIPS
How to Find College Fit
Choosing a college is a huge commitment. Youāre going to be deciding the life you want for the majority of the next 4 years. For this reason, itās important to keep in mind how youāre going to fit in at the colleges on your list. If you think a college is a great fit for you, you might want to move it higher on your college list, but more importantly, if a college is not a great fit for you, you may want to remove it from your list so that you avoid spending the next 4 years at a place you donāt enjoy. But, what is college fit? In this section, Iāve split up college fit into 3 āsidesā of fit to help you analyze the colleges on your list.
š Identify Your Academic Needs: Start by considering what you want to study and the type of academic environment that suits you best. Are you looking for a school with strong programs in your major? Do you prefer large lecture halls or smaller, discussion-based classes? You can find most of this information online on the collegeās website, through virtual information sessions, or through an in-person campus visit. You can then use this information to determine whether the schoolās academic program is one that you want to spend 4 years in.
š Consider the Campus Culture: Campus culture plays a big role in your college experience. Think about the type of social environment you want. Do you prefer a school with a lively campus life and a lot of extracurricular activities, or are you looking for a quieter, more focused atmosphere? Consider factors like school size, location (urban vs. rural), and diversity to get a sense of where youāll feel most comfortable. See what clubs exist at the club to help give you a sense of who youāll be around for 4 years.
šµ Evaluate Financial Fit: College can be a significant financial investment, so itās important to consider costs and financial aid options. Look at tuition, room and board, and other expenses, and research the financial aid packages offered by each school. Make sure youāre aware of scholarship opportunities and understand the total cost of attendance to find a college thatās affordable for you and your family. You donāt want to end up going to a college that is not financially fit for you as not only does that affect your next 4 years, but also debts can affect your life after those 4 years.
Finding your college fit is about balancing your academic, social, and financial needs with the opportunities each school offers. By identifying your priorities, researching thoroughly, and experiencing campuses firsthand, youāll be able to make an informed decision that leads to a fulfilling college experience. Remember, the right fit is different for everyoneāfocus on what matters most to you.
