What is Rice’s Vibe?

What are their essays, and what are they looking for?

Prompt #1: Please explain why you wish to study in the academic areas you selected above. (150 word limit)

This is your standard "Why Major?" prompt, but with a twist—Rice wants to know not only what academic areas excite you but also how those interests align with Rice’s resources and offerings. Be specific about your passions, and connect them to opportunities unique to Rice, such as research projects, professors, or interdisciplinary programs. Avoid vague statements; instead, highlight moments or experiences that sparked your interest in your chosen field and why Rice is the perfect place to pursue it.

What life experiences and/or unique perspectives are you looking forward to sharing with fellow Owls in the residential college system?

• Rice is strengthened by its diverse community of learning and discovery that produces leaders and change agents across the spectrum of human endeavor. What perspectives shaped by your background, experiences, upbringing, and/or racial identity inspire you to join our community of change agents at Rice?

Prompt #3 is Rice’s way of asking how you’ll enrich their campus culture. ✍️ Crafting a Strong Abstract

• Your abstract is your elevator pitch! Clearly state your research question, methodology, key results, and impact in a concise, engaging way.

• Tailor it to the conference’s theme—be specific about how your work fits.

📄 Writing a Compelling Paper or Poster

• Follow the conference’s guidelines to the letter, from formatting to word count.

• Highlight what makes your research unique and include visuals, like charts or diagrams, to support your findings.

• Proofread carefully or ask mentors for feedback before submission.

🧐 Understanding Peer Review
